JSWISS – Out-of-State Intuition 2: Leave Me A Loan (Mixtape)

In the midst of heavy procrastination season, Julian Michael Caldwell aka JSWISS gives us what we all need… just one more thing to do rather than study for exams. This newest project shows enormous growth from the Westchester, NY native and UNC student, and pretty much assures that he is the best rapper here at school– though I suspect he has bigger things in mind. While some songs still only appeal to golden era hip-hop, lyrical rap enthusiasts, Swiss is definitely starting to find his groove with head-bobbing songs that even casual listeners can get into. Below are a few of my favorites from the project– hopefully at least one of these appeals to any one of you. Take a listen below, and download the tape!

Original Logo Tee is BACK!

So with final projects and looming exams and all that shit, we haven’t had the chance to put the new run of the Original Logo shirts on our online store and really let everyone know that we have them! Well… they’re here. And we only have 15 left (sorry). We always like to switch up colors and styles (it’s almost tank top season) in between runs, so if this is the colorway and style you like– don’t hesitate! It could be a while before we print these exact tees again. Grab yours HERE, and keep in mind that discount code ‘LOCAL’ gets you free shipping if you life in Chapel Hill/Carrboro!

Will Wildfire – “5503″ (Mixtape)

As I’ve written before, you’ve probably come in contact with Will Hoggard (aka Will Wildfire) before without even knowing it. Hoggard is the dreadlocks, straw hat, guitar guy who likes to play and sing on campus. For a lot of people, this is enjoyable. For others, it preys on their deepest insecurities and forces them to leave hateful comments on our blog. Haters aside, it’s great to see Will getting some stuff recorded in addition to performing live. This is his first ever full project– and all things considered, the sound is pretty damn good. Definitely room for tweaking and improving, but a promising start. Check out the tracks below and download the full tape here!

JSWISS – #LeaveMeALoan Episode 2

With less than a week remaining before the release of his new project, Out-of-State Intuition 2: Leave Me A Loan, JSWISS drops another episode in his video series based on life as a college emcee. This video shows him doing a fun collaboration with UNC Harmonyx acapella group, then talking about unreleased track “Momma I Made It” in the studio. I’m already crazy about this U’Nique-produced beat.

JSWISS – “Stars” (Prod. by Foolery)

JSWISS and the No9to5 crew have been playing shows in and around Chapel Hill nonstop, promoting their group mixtape as well as Swiss’s upcoming release on April 30, Out of State Intuition 2: Leave Me A Loan. On this latest track, Swiss goes in over the production of Kooley High beatmaker Foolery, adds on the vocals of Noelle Leader, and the result is my favorite JSWISS track to date. These are definitely some of the tightest verses he has put out, including: “Powerful like a titan felt/Comin’ for the title, it’s a heist on Orion’s belt.” The song centers around society’s obsession with stardom and celebrity, and Swiss’s own contradicting disgust and desire for fame.

Luckily for us, as a sponsor of the upcoming project, we got first dibs on posting the track. Hope y’all like the Drake-inspired art!

Optimus Rhymes (of No9to5) – Baggage Room

Optimus Rhymes, known to some as AJ Reynolds, recently dropped off a new track for us just before he and the No9to5 crew hit the stage to open for 2 Chainz at the CUAB Jubilee show. This is definitely a feel good hip-hop track that just about anyone can probably bob their head to. From his FB posts and tweets, it sounds like Optimus is going to be putting out a lot more material in the future, so stay tuned. If you want more, Optimus and No9to5 will be headlining our final SPRUNG show at Jack Sprat this coming Friday, with SkyBlew kicking things off at around 9.

Now Available at Clothing Warehouse!

We’ve been selling Chapel Hill-inspired threads for a minute now, but one glaring thing we had still failed to do was get our gear in an actual storefront downtown. That changed yesterday when I got a call from Ryan Hill, owner of Clothing Warehouse, about stocking Thrill City.

Clothing Warehouse is like a “Best Of” of vintage/second-hand stuff, if you will. The prices will be lower at the PTA Thrift Shop or Goodwill, but you also have to sift through a lot more crap. Plus, Clothing Warehouse offers other stuff like great hats, shades and buttons/pins that are brand spankin’ new. Now, they’re adding independent brands to the arsenal. You can see us in the window picture above next to our friends at LifEKiT, with their “Stay Humble” tee.

Online promotion can be great, but there’s nothing like having visibility to people just walking down Franklin Street. This is a huge step for us and we hope to only grow from here.
